With a little extra love and care, a shelter or rescue dog can be a great addition to your family. While not every dog that comes from a shelter has a traumatic past, there is really no way to know what your new dog has been through. You will need to be patient as your new pet adjusts to his new environment. It is common for shelter or rescue dogs to display aggression, anxiety, and/or disobedient behaviors. If you’re having difficulty training your new pet, a professional training program can help make the transition easier for both you and your dog. At Dog Training Elite, we offer aggressive dog training in Fitchburg / Leominster and other programs designed for shelter or rescue dogs. Below are some simple training steps you can take
to ensure an easy transition for your pet:
- Create a safe space
It is important for your dog to have a place they can go when they feel overwhelmed or afraid. A crate is a great idea as it creates a safe environment for your dog and also makes housetraining easier. - Allow for adjustment
Your new dog will need some time to adjust to his surroundings. Be patient while your dog explores your home and yard. - Stay on schedule
Dogs benefit from routine as much as people do. Create a schedule for food, training, and play so your dog can have some stability. - Give lots of love
Most rescue or shelter dogs haven’t had the most positive past. With lots of extra love and attention, you can help them feel safe and secure in their new home.
Our Balanced Theory
We base our training around the "Classical Conditioning" model (a.k.a. "Pavlovian" or "respondent conditioning"). This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form (after proper conditioning), when the owner says "sit," the dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter.
-
Empowering Owners
We empower Owners to train so their dog knows who to obey at all times. -
Personalized

We train wherever issues tend to arise (i.e. jogging, park, home).
-

We support Owners in the off-hours (when training is "not in session"). -
Involved
We work with all members of the household. -
Simplified & Customized
We plan training around the owner's schedule and require only 20 min/day follow-up practice.
