Service Dog Training FAQs

Service dogs are dogs that have been specially trained to assist their handler or owner with specific tasks. Dog Training Elite in Houston trains dogs to assist people with epilepsy, diabetes, PTSD, autism, and various mental illnesses.

Service dogs are for any individual dealing with a disability that lowers their quality of life. For example, someone who suffers from epilepsy may avoid going out in public due to a fear of falling or other consequences related to seizures. This may inhibit their independence and sense of well-being.

In addition to improving the lives of individuals, service dogs can bring a sense of security to families, such as families with autistic children. Children with autism can often feel isolated and a service dog becomes a 24/7 companion to share experiences with, connect with and love. They can also help children reintegrate into society and connect with others.

Families who have children with autism experience a decrease in stress as they are more able to engage socially in public settings and experience less anxiety at home. A service dog increases safety and has a calming presence that can minimize emotional outbursts, allowing the family to feel more secure and a child with autism to better participate in family activities.

Service dogs are for all individuals or families that are experiencing a decrease in quality of life due to disability.

Service dog training begins with puppies. Dog Training Elite in Houston’s service puppy training program works with breeders to adopt puppies that are fully obedience trained by six months and are ready to undergo extensive socialization and additional training to ensure they are well-suited for service and therapy needs.

Then, Dog Training Elite in Houston places puppies with families or individuals. Further specialized service training takes place alongside the new handler. It generally takes 1-2 years for a service dog to become fully trained.

Service dog training focuses on two main areas: public access behaviors, and how to “do work or perform tasks” that assist with a disability.

Public access behaviors refer to how a service dog acts in public - well-trained service dogs remain calm in public situations and in turn help their handlers to stay calm, and are attuned to any other handler needs.

As for “do work or perform tasks,” the ADA requires that service dogs be trained to take a specific action when needed to assist the person with a disability.

For example, to assist handlers with PTSD, Dog Training Elite in Houston trains dogs to de-escalate anxiety, wake handlers experiencing night terrors, and so on.

The ADA does not require special certification for service animals. State and local government agencies, businesses and non-profit organizations may not require documentation, such as proof that the animal has been certified, trained or licensed as a service animal, as a condition for entry. Mandatory registration of service animals in the city of residence is also not permissible under the ADA.

However, service animals are not exempt from local animal control or public health requirements, such as vaccinations, or local dog licensing and registration requirements.

Dog Training Elite in Houston sets itself apart from other dog training methods by focusing on positive reinforcement with a personalized, in-home approach. This method empowers owners and handlers to be an integral part of the process for sustained dog obedience and service training. For service dogs especially, it is important that handlers be present and involved every step of the way.

The positive reinforcement approach, also referred to as “Classical Conditioning” or the “Pavlovian” model has shown to be more effective with longer lasting results than any other training method.

Dog Training Elite in Houston does not use punishments or shock collars to break bad habits. Instead, Dog Training Elite in Houston pairs positive reinforcement training with a vibration electronic collar. An electronic collar is not a shock collar and does not harm the dog. It is used to gain the dog’s attention, similar to a tug on a leash. It is never used as a punishment for bad behavior.

Another unique aspect of training with Dog Training Elite in Houston is that while most dog training programs train dogs at their own facilities, Dog Training Elite in Houston specializes in in-home training, customizing training to the dog, its owners and its environment for long-lasting success.

Positive Reinforcement Training

Training takes time, commitment and balance and Dog Training Elite in Houston is there every step of the way. With Dog Training Elite in Houston, dogs will learn the highest level of obedience, even in the face of the toughest level of distractions. The positive-reinforcement method focuses on encouraging good behavior through ongoing praise, creating a dog that wants to please from the inside out and creating deep-rooted, sustained obedience as well as a strong bond between dog and owner.

Our Balanced Theory

We base our training around the "Classical Conditioning" model (a.k.a. "Pavlovian" or "respondent conditioning"). This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form (after proper conditioning), when the owner says "sit," the dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter.

Bob is amazing! Our puppy was a poor emaciated rescue in need of love and security and once settled and healthy, was a very rambunctious pup. Bob has the patience of a saint in working with our baby and giving us practical milestones, lots of encouragement and advice along the way. Our puppy is MUCH better behaved and providing the structure needed makes for a happier household all around.

From the moment they stepped in my house I could see the passion for training and the lov for dogs they had. They move as slow or as fast as your dog needs. Shaping the training to suit your pet always reminding you that you are now a part of their family and they will always be there to help. Not only did they teach my Goose(dogs name) to be my battle buddy(service dog) but they taught me how to work with him. They have given me the ability to start to get my life back. I can’t ever repay them for that.

Daniel and Rachel are truly exceptional. We’re delighted to have chosen them as our dog, Cooper’s, trainers. Thanks to their professionalism, Cooper transitioned from being a rescue to a service dog. They are focused on doing a great job and attentively addressed every concern we had, always ready to assist. They make us feel more like friends than just Cooper’s trainers. Thanks to their guidance, Cooper accompanies us everywhere. Even through life’s ups and downs, they are always there for Cooper and us. I am thrilled to share my incredibly positive experience with Dog Training Elite services. After just three weeks of in-facility training, my beloved dog Freya has transformed into an outstanding service animal, exceeding all expectations. I couldn't be more delighted with the results, and I wholeheartedly give Dog Training Elite a well-deserved 5-star review. From the moment we enrolled Freya in their program, the professionalism and dedication of the team were evident. Talia tailored a comprehensive training plan specifically for Freya's needs, ensuring a personalized approach that addressed her unique qualities. Talia exhibited a genuine passion for her work, creating a positive and supportive environment that fostered Freya's development. One of the most remarkable aspects of Dog Training Elite is their ability to achieve results quickly without compromising the well-being of the animals. Freya's newfound skills, include nudging, cover, and 6 showcase the effectiveness of the training methods employed by Talia. Not only did Freya exhibit remarkable progress during the in-facility training, but she also successfully passed her service dog test with flying colors. This achievement is a testament to the expertise and commitment of the Dog Training Elite team. I am immensely grateful for the positive impact this has had on Freya's life and, consequently, on mine. Thanks to their exceptional services, Freya is now officially my service dog, providing invaluable support and companionship. The bond between us has deepened, and I credit Dog Training Elite for facilitating this transformation. In summary, if you are looking for top-notch dog training services that yield remarkable results, look no further than Dog Training Elite. My Doberman puppy and I have had great success with their training program. The instructors are professional dog trainers with an incredible amount of patience and experience with all types of dogs. My 8 month Doby is now 56lbs and I'm 5'1. Without their help I would not be able to walk my dog without being dragged by her, she's can already over power me, but she doesn't. Highly recommend their dog training services.

I was so overwhelmed trying to find a trainer for my Canne Corso puppy Lola. It didn't feel right to go to a "board and train" leaving my baby with strangers and letting them train her. I'm so glad I went with Dog Training Elite. Rachel and Daniel are the real dog whisperers! My puppy was totally OUT OF CONTROL. In no time Lola was more obedient and calm... I could actually have people over without having to put her away.. our walks stopped being stressful and EMBARRASSING like they were before ( Lola was basically walking ME!!) I highly recommend Rachel and Daniel at Dog Training Elite. They are patient, listened to my concerns, and were available for phone consultations between training sessions. They also had flexible training times that fit into my busy life. If I could give 10 stars I would!!

Rachel and Daniel are amazing, we are so happy they are the company we went with. They listened to and helped with every concern we had, always available to help. I am thrilled to give Daniel and Rachel from Dog Training Elite a well-deserved 5-star review! Our 9-month-old golden retriever was causing us quite a bit of concern with his unruly behavior and aggression, making it challenging to have him around our kids. We were on the brink of considering a new home for him, but then we found Daniel and Rachel. Their patience and expertise were truly remarkable. Not only did they work diligently to train our dog, but they also guided us in establishing a calmer and more stress-free environment. Our dog's resource guarding and aggression issues are so much better thanks to their dedicated efforts. Through their guidance, our puppy has now mastered essential commands like "place," "sit," "down," "off," and "heel." He's like a completely transformed dog! Our friends and family can't believe the level of obedience he has achieved. No longer does he jump on guests or rush to the door; instead, he waits patiently until he's invited to greet them. Daniel and Rachel make an incredible team. Their commitment to improving our dog's behavior and our relationship with him is truly commendable. We are immensely grateful to have discovered their services, and we wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone seeking professional and effective dog training. Thank you, Daniel and Rachel, for turning our pup into a well-mannered and obedient companion!

DTE has been an amazing help for our rescue dog. From the first at home visit, we knew that the trainer, Alex, would be great for helping our dog with aggression issues and socialization. The one on one, at home training sessions that occur before group training give a perfect foundation and ample time for practice before joining group training sessions. Alex brought one of his dogs, Delta, who is immaculately well trained, to our house for our last at-home session to help socialize our dog and practice being around other dogs in as low-stress an environment as possible. We have really enjoyed the sense of community with group training each week and have seen wonderful changes in our dog's temperament and socialization. After a stray dog attack shortly after we adopted him, we feared he would never be able to be near other dogs, but he has many friends now that he happily sniffs and interacts with. I cannot recommend DTE highly enough!

I highly recommend Dog Training Elite North East! I had a 12 week old, stubborn dominant Dobie when Rachel entered our lives. We began with Puppy Training and had great results, in spite of my husband and myself. At that time I found out that they also did Service Dog Training, which is what I needed. Rachel has done wonders with my Stubborn baby. She has never let either of us give up especially when I didn’t think Zoe or myself were ever going to be able to finish this course. As I said before we were dealing with a very stubborn animal, Rachel is always kind but firm when it was necessary and genuinely loves “her” babies. I am so very pleased at what Zoe is able to do now, on command. I have no doubt that Zoe will be a certified service dog in the next few months. If you are the least bit interested in having your baby trained, at any level, I cannot recommend Rachel or her equally awesome husband Daniel highly enough.
